Edmonton is the only major city in Canada without a hospital that is built to care for children. The Stollery Children’s Hospital serves children and families from every corner of our province and beyond - all within the walls of a general hospital. That’s why we’re asking you to use your voice to help us build a new children’s hospital. We can better serve the diverse health and safety needs of our children if we hear more from everyone.
We’ve partnered with Goodbit to bring you Reflect: a privacy-first tool built by the Goodbit team to help people get more involved and see themselves in the bigger picture. From planning and development to safety and health, Reflect makes it easier for communities to connect on what matters to them. As you learn about what the Stollery is working on and share your views, you will be able to compare responses from others who care deeply about children’s health in Alberta.
The results will help the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation prioritize issues and guide decisions on new health-care infrastructure and programs. We hope that in addition to getting to know more about each other, you leave the experience a little more informed about what’s currently happening in Alberta when it comes to children’s health services.
With the help of our generous donors, the Stollery Children’s Hospital has been serving the children and families of Alberta and beyond for more than 20 years.
Bob and Shirley Stollery donated the seed money to build a children’s hospital within the Walter C. Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre to serve the Edmonton area. With the support of thousands of donors since then, the Stollery Children’s Hospital has grown to become a world leading pediatric health institution, with over 300,000 annual patient visits.
Two of every five patients travel from beyond the Edmonton area to get to the Stollery, which has the largest catchment area of any children’s hospital in North America. Families travel from all four western provinces and the three territories to receive care at the Stollery.
We have outgrown the space we have. To best serve our patients and to ensure that we continue to be a world leading children’s hospital, we need to construct a stand-alone building. And to do that, we need your help.
The Stollery Children's Hospital team works across three locations.
The Stollery Children's Hospital is home to the only pediatric emergency department in northern Alberta, the David Schiff Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Hiller Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the Labonte Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and many more spaces that house the Stollery's world-class care. The Stollery Children's Hospital also has programs and services at other sites. This includes the 69-bed Stollery Philip C. Etches Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), located at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, and the six-bed Stollery NICU at the Sturgeon Community Hospital. Currently, Children's Mental Health beds are not located at the Stollery Children's Hospital.

The Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation conducts its work from the place currently known as Edmonton, historically called Beaver Hills House or Amisk-wachee-was-sky-ikan in Cree, which is within Treaty 6 Territory. These are the traditional territories and historical gathering place of Cree, Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, Ojibway, Saulteaux, Anishinaabe, and Papaschase First Nations and is part of the Métis Homeland. Since time immemorial, Indigenous Peoples have gathered here to trade, share seasonal harvesting grounds and waterways, and to put to practice their cultural and legal customs. Especially important to our work here today, Indigenous Peoples have provided traditional healing and health care to children across this land.
The Stollery is home to the most specialized children’s health care in Western Canada - it’s the hub for pediatric heart surgery and a national leader in organ transplantation.
However, the Stollery is the only children’s hospital of its size in North America that’s woven into an adult health-care facility. Just 236 beds are serving over half a million kids out of a building that wasn’t built for the job. As Alberta grows rapidly, more kids will rely on the Stollery and we cannot fail them. We need a single site that provides world-class pediatric health care for our children, and we need it now.
